Renewables Subsidies Hit New August Record

Renewables Subsidies Hit New August Record

Posted On: September 30, 2024
The addition of the newer, cheaper offshore wind farms has not had a significant impact on the subsidy per MWh. The reduction in average strike price has been overwhelmed by a combination of the indexation upwards in April and cheaper gas prices since last year. Even if gas prices stay at the current elevated levels, we are unlikely to see a significant reduction in the subsidy per MWh because increased generation from renewables pushes down the IMRP, thus increasing subsidies. For the generators it is heads they win, tails the consumer loses. . . . [More]

The Great Hurricane Of 1896

The Great Hurricane Of 1896

Hardly scientific! The analysis by Partagas, which is referred to and which the latest analysis is based on can be read here, and is no better, mainly referring to newspaper reports. Nowhere in any of their or the HRD analysis is there any mention of actual recordings of wind speed or central pressure. Hardly surprising, given that all happened in 1896. Yet we are expected believe that Helene, with considerably less damage, both in Florida and inland, was a much stronger storm.Re Posted From: The Great Hurricane Of 1896Watts Up With That . . . CNN blames fossil fuel pollution for Hurricane Helene's intensity, as it would not have been as severe or rapidly intensified as much without the supercharging from global warming. Fracking and the Election: It’s Not About Pennsylvania

Posted On: September 28, 2024
Low natural gas prices are essential to lowering inflation and retaining an American manufacturing edge. Natural gas prices feed into the costs of almost all products, since natural gas is the major source of electricity in the U.S. A rise in power cost, translates to a rise in the costs of manufactured goods. In addition, natural gas is the feedstock of fertilizer, thus price rises in natural gas, translate to higher food costs.Re Posted From: Fracking and the Election: It’s Not About PennsylvaniaWatts Up With That . . . Even if, contrary to the AP’s suggestion, corn production is not being harmed by worsening climate conditions, Bayer’s short corn variety may prove beneficial for farmers. It seems that, per the AP, “[t]he smaller plants also let farmers plant at greater density, so they can grow more corn on the same amount of land, increasing their profits.” The shorter corn may also use less water. Both conditions should, in theory, make corn production more profitable, regardless of climate change, so there is a bit of good news in the AP’s otherw . . . [More]
