Affordable electricity can resolve worldwide poverty.
Posted On: October 30, 2024
It would not take a lot of imagination to see free enterprise vs. government regulations spreading to the world. Running water, sanitation, and modern appliances would find their way into the poverty centers in South Asia, Africa, and the Pacific and East Asia. It just takes leadership.Re Posted From: Affordable electricity can resolve worldwide poverty.Watts Up With That . . . [

Jo Nova: $650m in renewable energy didn’t save Broken Hill from days of blackouts after a storm is
Posted On: October 30, 2024
Nova's story raises critical questions about energy policy and the realistic capacity of renewables to provide energy security. While her perspective is skeptical of the efficacy of renewables in their current state, it emphasizes the importance of preparing for the unpredictability of weather-dependent energy sources. Her article serves as a reminder that in the rush to achieve net-zero targets, the reliability of power supply, especially during crises, should not be overlooked.Re Posted From: Jo Nova: $650m in renewable energy didn’t save B . . . The Generational Opportunity for U.S. LNG

No, Fossil Fuels Are Not Being “Subsidised”
Posted On: October 30, 2024
Whenever discussing renewables subsidies on the internet, there is a form of Godwin’s Law that means it is inevitable that someone will come along and say: “Ackshually, fossil fuels are subsidised more than renewables,” or words to that effect, as shown in this example. I have often thought the claim to be bogus, but until now had never dug into the detail to prove the case one way or the other.Re Posted From: No, Fossil Fuels Are Not Being “Subsidised”Watts Up With That . . . Big Battery Fire Regulation Confusion in Washington State
Posted On: October 29, 2024
Washington State needs to quickly promulgate and enforce fire safety regulations specifically for grid scale battery complexes. These should cover emergency planning and preparedness, where the latter includes both facility design and material readiness. Design includes container spacing and other necessary engineering features. The material readiness includes having a supply and delivery system for water and/or fire suppressants as needed to prevent a chain reaction of container fires.Re Posted From: Big Battery Fire Regulation Confusion in Wa . . . Oops, Science Was “Settled”—Until It Wasn’t: Plants Absorb 31% More CO₂ Than We Thought
Posted On: October 29, 2024
Climate models are supposed to be sophisticated tools that simulate future warming scenarios, guiding policies that dictate everything from energy production to consumer behavior. These models are presented with an air of certainty, even as they rest on assumptions that can—and do—prove incorrect.Re Posted From: Oops, Science Was “Settled”—Until It Wasn’t: Plants Absorb 31% More CO₂ Than We ThoughtWatts Up With That . . . A Demonstration: Low Correlations Do Not Necessarily Lead to Low Confidence in Data Regressions
Posted On: October 29, 2024
But the main point of this post is to demonstrate that low correlations between two dataset variables do not necessarily mean low confidence in regression slopes (and intercepts). The confidence intervals also depend upon how much data are contained in the dataset.Re Posted From: A Demonstration: Low Correlations Do Not Necessarily Lead to Low Confidence in Data RegressionsWatts Up With That . . .
